It’s a tragic accident. A teenager lost his life at the end of October after falling following illness caused by vaccination against the papillomavirus. The French National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) has therefore reviewed the post-vaccination surveillance instructions put in place in France.
While a 5th grade student from the Saint-Dominique college in the town of Saint-Herblain in Loire-Atlantique has just died at the end of October after having suffered a bad fall following discomfort caused by vaccination against the papillomavirus , the ANSM has just published a new document updating post-vaccination safety instructions. This Tuesday, November 14, 2023, almost two weeks after this tragic accident, the National Medicines Safety Agency announced that it was paying more particular attention to adolescents vaccinated against the human papillomavirus.
In the document we can read that after 15 years of vaccination on more than 12 million French people that the vaccine against HPV (human papillomavirus) can cause discomfort called syncope without “presyncopal symptoms» within 15 minutes after injection. It is also added that these uncommon discomforts may be accompanied by other symptoms such as tremors or stiffness. The ANSM therefore recommends in this official document to put in place “simple measures (…) to avoid any injury: vaccinated people must remain lying down (on floor mats or blankets) or sitting on the ground leaning against a wall in a clear space“.

An investigation opened by the Nantes public prosecutor’s office
If until now post-vaccination instructions already existed such as the application of monitoring for 15 minutes after an injection, the framework of this monitoring was not specified. It was only in June 2023 that a note published by the Île-de-France Regional Health Agency indicated that as part of the vaccination campaign against papillomavirus in colleges, students had to be seated on chairs or armchairs.
Insufficient instructions in view of this tragic accident since the teenager in question had indeed been seated on a chair after receiving his injection: “the middle school student, who did not feel well shortly after the injection, was seated in a chair and fell back on his head after feeling unwell“. The Nantes public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into manslaughter in the context of this case.
