New series – Mazda CX-80: six-cylinder now a class higher

For years, Mazda was considered a specialist in small, compact and medium-sized vehicles. Now, after the CX-60, they are bringing an even larger sister model. The Mazda CX-80 is on the same platform and also celebrates the six-cylinder diesel.

Many brand fans were wide-eyed when Mazda presented the CX-60, a 4.75 meter long crossover and thus a new top model for Europe, almost two years ago. Now the Japanese are adding even more – exactly 25 centimeters in length and wheelbase and 2.4 centimeters in height. CX-80 is the name of the new, powerful brand flagship, which is also based on the “Skyactive Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture”. -Platform for vehicles with longitudinally installed drives. With a basic price of around 60,000, it will be around 7,000 euros more expensive than its smaller sister model. Plug-in hybrid not up to date Two drives are in the range for the CX-80, both of which are known from the 1960s and each have four-wheel drive and an eight-speed drive. Have automatic as standard. The plug-in hybrid combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 192 hp and an electric motor with 129 kW/175 hp to give a system output of 327 hp. However, the purely electric range of the plug-in, which weighs over 2.2 tons, is no longer quite up to date at 60 kilometers. The second engine is the 3.3-liter diesel. The six-cylinder engine, an engine developed by Mazda specifically for the large series, is supported by a 48-volt mild hybrid system and has an output of 254 hp with a standard consumption of 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. Unlike in the CX-60, the same engine with output reduced to 200 hp and rear-wheel drive is not used in the CX-80, at least initially. The storage space in the new, 4.95 meter long top model is even more generous. If all three rows of seats are set up, the trunk volume is only a comparatively modest 285 liters, including a compartment in the loading floor. If you fold down the seats in the third row, a large space with 687 liters of storage space is created. If the second row of seats is also folded down, 1221 liters are available when loaded up to the height of the windows. And if you load the CX-80 fully to the roof, the volume increases to a generous 1971 liters, an increase of around 250 liters compared to the CX-60. Seven seats as standard Compared to the CX-60, the additional space comes primarily to the rear benefit. The CX-80 always has three rows of seats in a 2-3-2 arrangement. If you choose one of the higher of five equipment levels, Homura or Homura Plus, you can swap the middle 3-seater bench for two comfortable individual seats at no extra charge. In addition, the second row of seats can be moved by up to twelve centimeters and the backrest angle is between 15 and 33 degrees variably adjustable. The backrests can be folded down at the push of a button. Otherwise, the vehicle’s equipment is largely identical to the smaller model. Highlights include the head-up display, the large panoramic roof, the Alexa voice control, the four-zone automatic climate control and the so-called “Driver Personalization System”, in which a camera recognizes the respective driver and the seat position, steering wheel position, exterior mirrors, head -up display and automatically adjusts the climate and sound settings. There are also practical USB-C ports in all three rows of seats. Market launch in Austria in autumn.
