After Word and Excel, hackers rely on another Microsoft application to plant malware on you. OneNote files are now in danger.

Cyber criminals like to use infected Word or Excel files to spread malware and send them in phishing emails. But now the hackers have expanded their repertoire with another Microsoft Office 365 application. OneNote files are also increasingly becoming carriers of malware, which is why you should beware of attachments of this type.
An increase in phishing emails containing OneNote files has been observed since mid-December. Since the notes application, unlike Word and Excel, is not able to start scripts for installing malware automatically when the attachment is opened, the hackers have to proceed differently: As Bleeping Computer reports, a button is inserted that you supposedly have to click to view the document. This starts the installation of the malware and your personal data, passwords or similar can be stolen.

So far, the new scam has mainly been seen in supposed invoices and DHL emails. As always, do not open messages from strangers, let alone the attached attachments. No matter what type of file or link it is. We also recommend installing antivirus software. Good programs also check your mailbox for threats.
