Compressing files and folders is a tradition that has been cultivated for decades. Windows can handle ZIP archives itself, but additional tools like WinRAR do it much better. WinRAR 6.10 comes with many new features.
“I’m packing my suitcase and taking the following files and folders with me”, under Windows this has been possible for many years with pack programs such as WinRAR. Windows has been able to unpack files and pack them in zip format for many years, but external helpers can handle many more formats, work faster and score points with comfort and additional functions that are not available with Windows on-board resources.
The most popular pack program for ZIP, RAR & Co. is WinRAR and it is now in Version 6.10 ready to download. The software can now be downloaded in both the English and German versions in a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. Caution: As a 64-bit user of WinRAR, you should also use the 64-bit version, which works faster.
WinRAR update 6.10: This is new
WinRAR 6.10 brings a lot of new features, which you can read in detail in the extensive release notes.
With the new release, the focus is on the full support of Windows 11. WinRAR is now fully compatible with the context menu of the right mouse button in Windows Explorer. The ancient Windows XP system is no longer supported at all – Windows Vista is now the minimum requirement for WinRAR.
Shareware without restrictions
WinRAR actually costs around 35 euros and if you want to do something good for the developer, you have to buy it and buy a license. But it has been an unwritten law for many years that the shareware can also be used free of charge without any restrictions on the range of functions. You can also ignore the 40 days specified for the trial version, WinRAR simply continues to run afterwards.
WinRAR additional functions: virus scan and benchmark
WinRAR not only packs and unpacks files and folders, especially in the “Extras” area there are practical additional functions. This is how archives can be searched for viruses. To do this, WinRAR uses the services of the installed virus scanner, such as Windows Defender. Archives can also be converted, repaired or converted to the self-extracting SFX format via the Extras menu.
There is also an integrated benchmark with which you can test the performance of your system. For real comparability, close all other programs and let the measurement run for a while.
