Security experts have discovered a new malware that hackers can use to gain access to your Windows system. The malware is hidden in this add-on.

The operating systems Windows 10 and Windows 11 are the most used worldwide. It’s not very surprising that cybercriminals repeatedly try to inject malware into them in order to gain valuable information.
Researchers from the Finnish security company WithSecure have now discovered a new and particularly dangerous piece of malware. The malware was named “Kapeka” and serves as a backdoor for attacks on Windows. Hackers are granted long-term access to the system.
The malware gets onto computers via an infected add-on for the Office application Word. Fortunately, there does not seem to be a mass distribution, as the experts report. It is more of a tailor-made tool that attacks selected systems.
The malicious software was created by none other than the Russian secret service. According to the experts, “Kapeka” comes from the cyber attack group “Sandworm”, which reports directly to the Russian Military Intelligence Service (GRU).
Microsoft has already confirmed WithSecure’s discovery and is working to close the loopholes the malware exploits to gain access. As the Tagesschau reports, the discovery and removal of the malware is an important step against Russia’s cyber war against the West and especially Ukraine.
