Between the demeaning reviews from the press and its score on Rotten Tomatoes below Morbius, Madame Web is undoubtedly a very underappreciated film. Its storyline, the acting and even the action scenes, everything is there, and a certain scene lasting a few seconds went down really badly with the public.

A scene in particular

Indeed, when it is released on February 14, 2024, the film Madame Web directed by SJ Clarkson was the victim of a veritable torrent of negative reviews on the web. Social networks, websites, everyone has talked about it and in bad ways, unfortunately.

That said, there is one very specific scene that made the most movie buffs among us cringe. Discovered very quickly by some, more slowly by others, the scene in question comes from another production! It’s exactly the same plan as an MCU film, released 20 years ago. A picture, or rather, a video, is worth a thousand words.

Eh yes ! This is indeed a scene from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2, released in 2004. Technically, the camera angle is very slightly different. The brightness is not the same and the speed has been changed. Finally, playing devil’s advocate will not have prevented spectators from noticing this striking resemblance. Very quickly, a few unfavorable sentences about the director’s laziness can be read on social networks and in reviews. Although this transition scene was probably a reference rather than laziness (the film takes place in 2003), the public was not of this opinion, unfortunately.

What has happened ?

Poorly done action scenes, particularly bad expository dialogues and a script… In short, what happened to Madame Webwhich was highly anticipated, only 11% on Rotten Tomatoes and 3.9/10 on IMDb? Where did the $80 million budget go? Who is ultimately to blame? In reality, the creation of the work was not the simplest. Initially, there were two screenwriters: Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Then Dakota Johnson, the lead actress of the film, was cast. She liked the script, she said in a interview made after the release of Madame Web. However, this same scenario was reworked by Claire Parker. The American actress and model really didn’t expect such changes.

The biggest problem, we discover in this same interview with Dakota Johnson. She states that the work has nothing to do with the script that she read at the beginning of its creation. Was the script considered bad towards the end of production? Did this ultimately not correspond to what the studio wanted? We understand that the working conditions were really very bad. The film went through too many different stages, without even having a stable and completely finished writing.

In addition to misleading the actors involved, this rewriting caused what are called “reshoots”. When a film has been filmed and is in the editing phase, we decide to reshoot scenes: These are therefore called reshoots/re-shoots. With a rewritten script, re-shot scenes, changes requested by the studio… That’s a lot and that’s probably why the film wasn’t as good as expected. All these problems undoubtedly contributed to this poor reception from the general public.
