A new hit on the Disney+ platform, Shōgun was entitled to a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes for a few days, until this journalist put his two cents in.
Adapted from the eponymous bestseller by James Clavell, Shōgun is the new event series available on the Disney+ platform. A show compared to Game of Thrones by certain critics whose verdict is almost unanimously dithyrambic. Brennan Klein for Screen Rant writes in particular that it could “finally becoming the first worthy replacement for Game of Thrones” when Phil Hornshaw from Gamespot said: “ever since Game of Thrones ended in 2019, I’ve been craving expansive medieval political intrigue. FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel Shōgun delivers exactly what I wanted”. For several days, Shōgun could even boast of inheriting the perfect score of 100% on the Rotten Tomatoes platform, at least, until yesterday. And yes, a man on Earth didn’t like Shōgun and wants to let it be known, dropping the series’ critical score by a small percentage. Journalist Rohan Naahar from the Indian Express site believes that the ten-episode miniseries offers sumptuous images, “but an overloaded plot“. To be sure, much of the visual language of the series appears to have been inspired not only by old Japanese films, but also by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto’s work on Scorsese’s lost masterpiece (Silence ). But unlike that film, which primarily dealt with the psychological troubles of an overzealous missionary, Shogun is a more ambitious project. It features many battles, large and small, and no expense has been spared on the beautiful costumes and lavish sets. But without an emotional anchor, you feel helpless at sea.
As a result, the film received a small rating of 2.5/5 on the media, bringing the Rotten Tomatoes score for season 1 down to 99%, with the press agreeing on the following consensus: “Visually sumptuous and enriched with cultural verisimilitude, Shōgun is an epic adaptation that surpasses the original” . On the public side, the score stands at an equally good 93%.

Shōgun, what is this about?
A mini-series in ten episodes, Shōgun sets its setting in 1600 in Japan, as a civil war is about to mark history. The viewer follows the adventures of John Blackthorne, the commander of a Dutch ship which runs aground on the beach of a fishing village in Japan. In possession of important secrets that could tip the scales in favor of Lord Yoshii Toranaga, he finds himself captured. At the helm, we find showrunners Justin Marks (Top Gun: Maverick, The Jungle Book) and Rachel Kondo (Girl of Few Seasons). Massively present in the trailers, Japanese actor Hiroguki Sanada is one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood. You recently saw him in Avengers: Endgame and John Wick 4. Note that a first adaptation of Shōgun already saw the light of day in 1980 and achieved a score of 75%. So we’ve never had better.
