Humility. Even the greatest in the world of cinema have had to face disappointments before finding the light. One of Marvel’s stars thus revealed having experienced a particularly awkward moment in the company of a legendary director.

A huge actor…

According to the great Christopher Nolan, director known for his prestigious films, whether Oppenheimer, Interstellar or Dunkirk, Tony Stark owes a lot to the charisma of Robert Downey Jr. Interviewed as part of the show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the British-American filmmaker thus praised the role of the actor in his Iron Man costume. Absolutely essential in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), Robert Downey Jr. was the very first Avenger to open the ball of this lore so appreciated by spectators around the world. This start, initiated in 2008, was then the starting point of an incredible saga of more or less successful feature films. Without revealing what becomes of him for those who have not seen the last Avenger film, we must understand that Iron Man is a true legend of the MCU. With eleven years of presence on screen, the famous superhero caught the eye of Christopher Nolan who admits:

With everyone you work with, with the actors… you’re looking for some kind of emotional, empathetic connection. You are looking for some kind of generosity. There is this incredible generosity of spirit. This means that when he is in a scene with other people, he ensures that they are all doing their best, that they are all capable of giving their best. It helps them clarify these emotional connections.

With all these confessions, one could believe that it would have been enough for Robert Downey Jr. to snap his fingers to obtain Nolan’s approval. And yet, their first meeting did not really go as the person concerned (read the future actor of Iron Man) had envisaged…

… yet failed at the start

While Robert Downey Jr. plays Lewis Strauss in the excellent Oppenheimer, the latter revealed that he met Christopher Nolan before that and that this meeting took a somewhat uncomfortable turn. Invited by the American Cinematheque, Robert Downey Jr. indicated that he met Christopher Nolan to obtain a role in Batman Begins around twenty years ago! Although he no longer knows exactly the ins and outs, he is almost convinced that it was the role of the Scarecrow. The problem was that he found himself facing a man (in this case, Nolan) who had little regard for what he represented: “ I remember meeting over tea, and he didn’t seem to have much faith in the interview. He was very polite and everything, but you know when you’re chatting with someone and you feel like it’s not going anywhere? I felt exactly that. » Fortunately, time has done its work…
