In our cinemas for a week now, Argylle has completely not pleased the critics at all. Between visual problems and an overly complex storyline, discover the press’ opinion on the flop at the start of the year.

Surely one of the most anticipated releases of the start of the year, Argylle was released on January 31 in our cinemas. Bringing together a plethora of renowned actors in a wacky and action-packed story, Argylle entertains as well as it divides.

What is Argylle?

The director of Kick-Ass and Kingsman returns to the forefront with Argyle, which is released in cinemas (in certain countries only) before being available on Apple TV +. It is a spy film starring the character of Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), a spy novelist who is on the 5th installment of her successful book series. However, after meeting a secret agent named Aidan (Sam Rockwell), she learns that the fictions in his books are real and that she can predict future events through her writing.. She will then be embarked on a hunt for a man (a woman rather) where hectic action scenes and twists and turns will intertwine. The public received the film quite well, which is not really the case with the press.

What does the press think?

Upon its release, Argyle received numerous negative reviews from several media outlets. Some protest against a failed search for tone, varying between the serious spy film with complex twists and the entertaining blockbuster without real thought.. As expressed Widescreen : “there are therefore two films in Argylle, a first half quite painful in its adventures and its script set-ups, and a second, more fun and liberated”. The film also suffers from a lack of finishing in terms of special effects, even if some find an explanation for this.. “Vaughn has always known how to use his VFX with an inventiveness that transcends their questionable photorealism, particularly in his improbable camera movements.” However, Argyle Still has some good points worth mentioning. Where the film scores the most is in the action scenes and choreography. This is what underlines the duty in their review: “ a shootout taking place in a cloud of multicolored smoke and a confrontation on an improvised ice rink are as funny as they are expertly choreographed”. Furthermore, even if it may have the effect of a crude PR stunt, the XXL casting present throughout the feature film is a big positive point. We find Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, John Cena and even Samuel L. Jackson.
