You may have watched this feature film, without knowing that it caused a huge controversy. A situation which pushed this international star to ask forgiveness from the people she offended.

Sacred Witches, a poorly received film

The works of Roald Dahl, famous British writer, have been the subject of numerous adaptations. The best known being those of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with that of 1971 directed by Mel Stuart and that of Tim Burton with Johnny Depp in 2005 or even Wonka released last year with Timothée Chalamet. Matilda also had cinematic versions, as did Sacred Witches in 1990 and more recently, in 2020. However, despite a five-star cast with the presence of‘Anne Hathaway (Interstellar, The Devil Wears Prada) in one of the main roles.

Directed by the legendary Robert Zemeckisto whom we owe cinematic juggernauts like Forrest Gump or Back to the Future, this title is unfortunately not a masterpiece and does not reflect his talent. In addition to having been broadcast in only a few cinemas due to the health crisis, it received a mixed reception. This feature film did not stand out for its originality, but above all made noise because of a controversy. Its main actress had to publicly apologize!

Anne Hathaway had to publicly apologize

When the film was released in 2020, viewers with disabilities were offended by the depiction of witches. These reveal their true form, with hands that closely resemble those of people with ectrodactyly. Thus, this film gave the impression of ridiculing a genetic disease that affects millions of people. This situation therefore led Anne Hathaway to publicly apologize with the Lucky Fin Project association.

I owe you all an apology for the pain caused. Sorry. I didn’t connect the different limbs of the character when they showed me the design. If I had, I assure you none of this would have happened. I especially want to apologize to children with different limbs. Now that I know, I promise to do better.

It was the actress who contacted this association in order to raise awareness on the subject among children suffering from this disease. The film, for its part, now has an average of 49% from the specialized press and 32% from spectators, which is particularly low. However, if you are curious to watch it to form your own opinion, it is currently available on Netflix.
