James Cameron, director behind Titanic and Avatar, was present in Paris for an exhibition dedicated to his work. It was on this occasion that he expressed his refusal to make an auto-biographical film.

“It would be too boring

If director James Cameron is not currently showing in the cinema, it is in the spotlight of the Cinémathèque française that he shines. This highlights the Canadian’s career through an exhibition. It was on this occasion that the newspaper Le Figaro was able to interview him. The daily newspaper addressed many subjects such as that of autobiographical films as Steven Spielberg was able to do with The Fabelmans (2023). Here is his response when questioned on the subject:

No, I will never make a film about my personal story. It would be too boring. I prefer to inspire vocations through my drawings. I have the impression that there is a crisis of confidence among young artists. They feel overwhelmed by a bombardment of images and media. They experience a continuous flow of films, series and video games. It’s hard for them to believe that they can make their voices heard. These artists are sometimes very good but they are reluctant to share and show their work.

It seems that it is, in a way, thanks to his children that he always wants to move forward. He declares them “reluctant to expose themselves” which he does not want to do: “Making a film about my past doesn’t interest me”.

Moving forward with a busy schedule until 2031

It’s hard to prove him wrong when we know that he still has several years behind the camera. Just with the license Avatarit is until 2031 that he should assume his role as director even if he does not rule out the idea of handing over to others:

(…) I am in the middle of post-production of the third part, alone in a room reworking the performance captures of the actors. The fourth is partly filmed. The fifth is written and ready. I will then have to let other directors enter the Avatar universe.

Leave your hands on Avatar, what next? If it is impossible to answer this question at the moment, we now know that it will be to move forward with, probably, a brand new project in mind.
