While a new season of Squid Game has been in the making for several months, Netflix is trying to capitalize on the insolent success of the South Korean series by preparing a US remake! And it would be signed by the director of Seven!
Squid Game, the return?
Launched in 2021, the South Korean series Squid Game has become a true global phenomenon. Modeled on the principle of Battle Royale, but with the aim of events taking place in a closed area. Superbly filmed and rich in twists and turns, the series brought in around $900 million for Netflix and crystallized a certain tension between its director and the video streaming platform. Faced with this success, and while the currency problems were resolved, Netflix and the creator of Squid Game agreed to create a new season. This has been filmed and should soon arrive on the service (we can already imagine a deafening buzz).
A remake of Squid Game in an American style?
The Wordofree.com site provides interesting information. According to Jeff Sneider, contacted by the author of this digital platform, David Fincher, the director of Seven and The Killer, would be working “discreetly” on the project. Via his Hot Mic podcast, Sneider explained that such a remake by this filmmaker would be a wonderful thing. The reason ? David Fincher has established himself in often very strange projects, where psychology – and even psychological violence – is omnipresent. Even if we know (almost) nothing yet about this remake, it seems that the direction undertaken by Fincher on this US Squid Game is even more disturbing. If we think back to a work like Seven, we can indeed imagine a series where psychology will be at the heart of the plot. Some would like the director to tackle another season of Mindhunter, but it’s not for now.
