The legendary Steven Spielberg would have loved the latest hit that comes straight from Japan: Godzilla Minus One. The genius filmmaker had the opportunity to meet director Takashi Yamazaki and tell him how much he loved his film. Enough to give him ideas for a future project?

Summit meeting

After having won the hearts of spectators around the world, Godzilla Minus is perhaps preparing to stand out in Hollywood during the next Oscars ceremony. The Japanese feature film is thus nominated in the category of best special effects, a nomination which has already delighted the film teams and which has given it a huge spotlight.

On the sidelines of this 96th edition, the nominees were able to meet up for the annual Academy of Oscars luncheon organized recently. And it was on this occasion that Takashi Yamazaki, the director of Godzilla Minus One, was able to meet one of his idols: Steven Spielberg. The Japanese filmmaker shared a photograph on Twitter/X, accompanied by a short text.

I met God. What remains for me to do now? I’m seriously crying. He told me he had seen Godzilla three times and loved the characters. I gave him a Godzilla figurine and he kindly accepted it…

The recipe for a successful Blockbuster

It is easy to understand Takashi Yamazaki’s enthusiasm upon meeting Steven Spielberg as the filmmaker has influenced the Seventh Art. We also find explicit references to the film Jaws within Godzilla Minus One, an already successful Blockbuster. Critics across the Atlantic were raves when the film was released at the end of last year, with it garnering a press and spectator score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In France, the rare spectators who had the chance to see Godzilla Minus One during its two limited theatrical releases gave it an equally good reception: on AlloCiné, the film obtained a press rating of 3.9/5 and spectator rating of 4.2/5. A real critical success, but also commercial since the feature film grossed more than $100 million at the international Box Office for a budget estimated at less than $15 million. A real success, which could greatly inspire Hollywood while the American film industry continues its commercial failures, despite exorbitant budgets.
