The Fallout series is just around the corner

If the video game studio Bethesda is best known for its The Elder Scrolls saga (the sixth episode of which is still in development), but we should not forget its other major license: fallout. With a first episode released in 1997 and a last in 2018, this apocalyptic and satirical universe with a retrofuturistic artistic direction largely inspired by the 1950s has largely been able to build a very large fan base since its creation until today. In 2020, Amazon hit very hard by announcing the creation of a television series adapted from this video game, and it is very soon time to see the result.

In fact, it is indeed the April 11 Next time subscribers to Amazon’s SVOD service will be able to discover the first episode of the Fallout series. Created, produced and written by Lisa Joy (Westworld) And Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight), the latter should not be a direct adaptation of the scenario of one of the opuses of the series but rather an original work located in the same universe.

Fallout tells the story of the survivors of a world where there is almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the inhabitants of the luxurious fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated apocalyptic landscape that their ancestors left behind and find themselves shocked to discover this incredibly complex, joyously strange and extremely violent world that awaits them . – Synopsis Allociné

At the casting, you will be able to find Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) in the main role of Lucy, but also Walton Goggins (tomb Raider) in that of the Ghoul, Johnny Pemberton (Superstore) in that of Thaddeus, Moises Arias (Hannah Montana) in the role of Norm and Kyle MacLachlan (Desperate Housewives) in that of Aufseher Hank.

Despite her great ambitions, she may not please everyone

Fans of pop culture and video games have become accustomed to it: with film adaptations, it’s difficult to know in advance whether the project will be good or not. Although there have still been some very good things in recent years, for example the film Super Mario or the series The Last of Ussome still have in mind some nonsense like Assassin’s Creed, Hitman or the movie The last air Master to recite nobody else but them. But while most fans generally agree on whether an adaptation is satisfactory or not (at least generally), there are still two categories: those who want to be caressed in the right direction and have exactly what they want, and those who accept the risks for the benefit of a potential surprise. If you fall into the first category, you may probably have a little trouble with the Fallout series.

Indeed, in an interview given to the site T3, the creators of the Amazon Prime series returned to the design of the latter, and suffice to say that they were clear. According to them, and more particularly according to Jonathan Nolan, it was more important to try to make a series that pleased the creators than to satisfy all the fans:

I don’t think you can really try to please fans of anything. Or pleasing someone other than yourself. I think we have to try to make the series we want to make and believe that, as fans of the game, we will find the elements that are essential to us… and that we will try to make it the best version.

You will have understood, the creators of the Fallout series do not necessarily intend to play it safe and prefer to offer their own work in the hope that it will be better and that it will also please the fans. Note, however, that the world of video games is far from unknown to Jonathan Nolan, who reveals in the same interview that he has always been passionate about them:

This game ate up about a year of my life. It almost derailed my entire career. The gameplay and fun is so ridiculous…seriously, the games were just amazing.

If these words will certainly not reassure the most skeptical, they may still please those who prefer to see a creator try new things with an established universe rather than taking the safest path. It remains to be seen whether this bet will be the right one, response April 11 on Amazon Prime Video.
