After a brief foray into the Marvel universe, would Matthew Vaughn be ready to join the DC team? If we are to believe the filmmaker’s statements, a particular comic could interest him.

The development of DC Elseworlds

Now that James Gunn and Peter Safran are leading the DCEU, the new DC Cinematic Universe has been slow to introduce itself to audiences. As we know, many projects are under development, like Superman: Legacy, the real starting point for this reboot. The project is planned for next year and should mark the advent of this new DCEU, which should also develop with additional projects, such as The Batman saga by Matt Reeves, carried by Robert Pattinson, or even the movie Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 film.

These films which exploit the Elsworlds branch of DC are not part of the continuity of the new DCEU and remain independent of each other, at least for now. But it is precisely this branch of the DCEU that interests Matthew Vaughn. The filmmaker, to whom we notably owe X-Men the Beginning, is a big fan of comics, including Superman. If he were to join the DC team, it would be one for a project in particular dedicated to the Kryptonian.

Superman the Red

A recent guest on BroBible’s Post Credit podcast, Matthew Vaughn was asked about several upcoming superhero films. He spoke in particular about Deadpool 3, but also the DC universe which he particularly likes. If he says he is “ready to consider” the production of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, it is above all another adaptation that interests him: that of Superman Red Son.

I think Red Son is one of the smartest comics I’ve read, and given the world we live in today, it’s certainly even more relevant, while ignorance causes more problems, and I think the more we learn about Russia and its history…Wow, can you imagine remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill? This is an interesting film…

Interrupting himself in mid-thought, the filmmaker ended up imagining a Red Son film with Henry Cavill in the lead. The actor and the filmmaker have just collaborated on Argylle and one day seeing Henry Cavill don the costume of Superman again – in a main film or in a spin-off – is enough to leave one wondering.

As a reminder, Superman: Red Son is an uchronistic series thought up by Mark Millar who here imagines a world where Superman would not have landed in the United States, but in the USSR in 1938. The Kryptonian then becomes a communist symbol and contributes to the development of ideology across the world. A fascinating story, which has already been adapted into an animated film and which we would love to discover in the cinema with a Live-Action project. We obviously hope that Matthew Vaughn’s statement will reach James Gunn.
