It’s via The Independent as we learn that an original edition of the first Harry Potter book was sold for 11,000 pounds sterling (12,840 euros) after being found in a school. Indeed, last summer, the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was unearthed at St Kenelm’s Primary School in Minster Lovell. Bought for a few cents in 1997, this edition, the first page of which indicates as author “Rowling” instead of JK Rowling, was put up for auction.
British auction house Hanson’s revealed that the copy was sold to a private British buyer for a price of 11,000 pounds sterling (12,840 euros). What will the school do with this money? The former director responds that he is dedicated to “develop a love of reading“children in “modernizing equipment” from school. As The Independent points out, this kind of story is not rare. In July 2023, another original edition of a Harry Potter book was sold at almost the same price (12,260 euros).
This is not rocket science
If you ever come out of a cave, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone tells the story of young Harry Potter, an orphan raised harshly by his aunt and uncle. The child will, however, learn more about his past, which will enlighten him about the destiny that lies before him. Harry then goes to discover Hogwarts, a school of witchcraft, in order to learn how to use magic. There he meets Ron and Hermione with whom he will befriend and go on an adventure to uncover the secret of the philosopher’s stone. As The Independent recalls, Harry Potter is a hugely profitable franchisesince it brought in around 25 billion euros.

The success of the books has led to film adaptations, various derivative products, video games (Hogwarts Legacy is also the best-selling video game of 2023 with 22 million sales) and soon a TV series orchestrated by the streaming platform HBO (scheduled for 2026). The producers behind this TV series project say “take their time” to offer to fans “the best possible series”. Each season will exploit a book, and JK Rowling is involved in this adaptation.
