The salvation of the Star Wars saga could come in 2024 from France. The world’s most famous science fiction franchise may be in difficulty across the Atlantic, but it is likely to find a second wind this year thanks to French cinema with this unique comedy which revisits the myth of Star Wars.

An animated film “made in France” proved at the end of 2023 that French cinema is capable of producing quality science fiction and at no time has to be ashamed of Hollywood productions. Mars Express directed by Jérémie Périn and co-written with Laurent Sarfati received an excellent critical reception (4.0/5 on AlloCiné) and the public was also there, giving this futuristic neo-noir thriller a score of 4.2/5 on AlloCiné. And it’s not over ! Next February, a cinematic UFO will land in our cinemas with the primary intention of parodying the master saga of science fiction: Star Wars!

The Empire Strikes Back in France

The 7th Art has some great surprises in store for moviegoers in 2024. Bruno Dumont, French director and screenwriter who previously distinguished himself on Camille Claudel 1915 (2023), Ma Loute (2016), Jeannette the Childhood of Joan of Arc (2017 ) or even Jeanne (2019) returns to the cinema with a… science fiction film. This simple premise appeals to those familiar with the filmmaker who has certainly always had a universe of his own, but has never dabbled in this genre until now. The Empire undertakes to parody Star Wars with its gleaming cast capable of carrying this “galactic” project on its shoulders (Camille Cottin, Lyna Khoudri, Anamaria Vartolomei, Fabrice Luchini, etc.).

The future of the Star Wars saga

Disney seems to have made a decision that will not necessarily delight early fans. The universe imagined by George Lucas leaves cinemas until spring 2026 to concentrate on Disney+. Lucasfilm is banking on its series to relaunch a saga which has somewhat lost its splendor since the postlogy. In 2024, three live-action series will enrich the universe imagined by George Lucas: Star Wars Lando, Star Wars Skeleton Crew and Star Wars The Acolyte. Season 3 of Star Wars The Bad Batch completes the offering. To see Star Wars on the big screen, you have to turn to the project involving Daisy Ridley and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy whose film continues the adventures of Rey and follows the events of Star Wars, Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker . Other film projects are also under study.
