In 2012 the ax fell. Disney is offering Lucasfilm and therefore the Star Wars franchise for the “modest sum” of 4 billion US dollars. 11 years later, the saga seems to have lost its luster under the direction of the North American entertainment giant. Well aware of having undermined the sympathy of this science fiction universe, several projects intended for cinemas are currently in development, including one which does not please fans for a reason that we can easily describe as “stupid”.
A new Jedi order
The next film in the Star Wars saga is now known. Recently made official by Disney, New Jedi Order will focus on the character of Rey played on screen by Daisy Ridley and will logically follow the postlogy (Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens / Star Wars, Episode VIII: The Last Jedi / Star Wars, Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker). The artist at the helm of the project is none other than two-time Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The filmmaker is an active feminist whose films address gender inequality between men and women in contemporary society. And it is on this precise point that the most conservative Star Wars fans are protesting on social networks.
Following the formalization of her position at the head of the film Star Wars: New Jedi Order, the Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker participated in the “Women in the World” panel alongside Meryl Streep and Jon Stewart. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy then declared:
I like making men uncomfortable. I take pleasure in making men uncomfortable. (…) It is important to be able to look a man in the eye and say to him: “I am here, I recognize it and I recognize that I am working to bring about something that makes you uncomfortable, and that should make you uncomfortable.” -Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
The comments made during these exchanges did not fail to provoke a strong reaction from a predominantly male community and to ignite X (formerly Twitter). Everyone makes their acerbic comments and castigates a director who, according to them, puts her political agenda before the interests of the saga…and this before even having seen the slightest image of Star Wars: New Jedi Order. As a reminder, the screenplay of the film is entrusted to Steven Knight who has distinguished himself on series such as Peaky Blinders (2013-2022), See (2019-2022) and SAS Rogue Heroes (2022), but also November Criminals (2017 ) and Millennium: What Doesn’t Kill Me (2018)… In short, a solid CV which in no way prevents certain personalities from judging the future feature film in advance.

Kathleen Kennedy is at the helm of the controversial Star Wars sequels. I don’t care about Ms. Obaid-Chinoy’s political views.
