#1 – One Piece: Z (2012)

One Piece: Z is the twelfth One Piece film, as well as the second produced by Eiichiro Oda. It can be integrated into the main story between the Fishman Island and Punk-Hazard arcs, after the two-year timeskip. The film features the character of Z, a former naval admiral and ex-mentor of Kizaru, who founded the Neo-Marine organization to eradicate piracy. To do this, he intends to use the destructive power of the Stones of Dyna, bombs of phenomenal power capable of destroying entire islands. The film stands out thanks to its gripping plot even if those uninitiated to the manga will have a little difficulty grasping all the details. It still remains the best One Piece film released so far.

This is the ultimate fan-service film. All the characters are fighting in the same place and many of them shouldn’t be present. One Piece: Stampede is enjoyable although incoherent.

One Piece: Strong World is the first film produced and directed by Eiichiro Oda. To include it in the manga timeline, he commissioned a mini-arc that introduced all the characters and plot from the film, and implemented it into the anime. The feature film introduces a well-known character from the manga, Shiki the Golden Lion, who was once the undisputed rival of the Pirate King. Missing for 20 years after escaping from Impel Down, he returns for revenge. When he meets Luffy and his crew, he kidnaps Nami for her navigation skills and forces his friends to come and save her. The only flaw in the film lies in the inconsistency of power around Shiki’s character. The latter is supposed to be the former rival of the most powerful pirate the world has known, but he is beaten by Luffy even before the two-year time-skip. Apart from this error, the film is extremely enjoyable, if a little long.

One Piece: Gold is the thirteenth film in the franchise. The Mugiwara arrive on the world’s largest entertainment ship, the Gran Tesoro. After winning multiple times at the casino, then being scammed by the master on board, Gild Tesoro, the crew will discover the dark history of this place and do everything to put a spoke in the wheels of the vile leader of Gran Tesoro. The film is graphically very accomplished and the golden decorations are really eye-catching. It still suffers from a plot that is too shallow and developed.

The 8th One Piece movie “The Miracle of the Cherry Trees in Winter” is quite different from the others because it is a rewrite of the Drum arc, where the character Chopper appears. Even if the events remain partly the same as in the original work, there are some differences. The characters of Robin and Franky are notably present, although they appear much later in the manga. However, the plot remains the same. The crew does everything to save Nami after she falls ill and lands on Drum Island, ruled by the tyrant Wapol.
