Capcom isn’t making friends in the PC gaming community right now!

For several weeks, the Capcom game players are making noise, following updates controversial. Recent additions to the Enigma Protector DRM software have caused a massive outcry among players on Steamaffecting not only gaming experiencebut also the compatibility with platforms like Steam Deck.

“Mods are as harmful as cheating”

The problem started in October 2023, when Capcom said mods were ‘as harmful as cheating’giving rise to very negative reactions from players. After a tournament incident on Street Fighter 6 involving a mod that made Chun-Li naked, Capcom released a video in which its R&D department stated that mods could damage the image and reputation of the company and its games. The situation has taken a more serious turn recently with the introduction of Enigma software in Resident Evil Revelations, intended to prevent modders from accessing games’ .exe files, and therefore, modifying the game itself. On paper, it is anti-cheat and anti-hack software, and on RE Revelations it didn’t really seem to affect in-game performance, or at least not for everyone. What is certain, however, is that it actually prevents modding.

Monster Hunter World not yet updated, already review-bombed

For now, Capcom has especially implemented Enigma in its old titles: Mega Man Zero / ZX Legacy Collection, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, Marvel VS Capcom Infinite … and therefore, now Resident Evil Revelations. Only, the players fear that it will become widespread. As a result, part of the community decided to down editor games (whether they are already affected by Enigma or not yet updated), and in particular, Monster Hunter World. The title, one of Capcom’s most popular games, thus suffered a big review-bombing on Steam, with comments denouncing these updates on other games from Capcom, which had not been announced. We can read in these opinions about Capcom that they “ruined everything”, that the Enigma software is “malware”, that it reduces performance by up to 10-15 FPSthat it prevents modding, etc… Some users even state that they have activated their antivirus now that Enigma is installed on their PC!

On the other hand, Enigma creates other big problems. While he has just been integrated into Monster Hunter Rise, to replace DenuvoEnigma broke the game: it is not simply more playable on Steam Deck (this doesn’t seem to affect everyone, though). Capcom announced it was “investigating the issue,” but players are already angry.

Players are trying to counter this review-bombing

To counter this review-bombing, Monster Hunter World fans reacted spectacularly. In just a few days, more than 8,000 positive reviews were published on the game’s Steam page, in an effort to compensate for the game’s falling average rating. Players have expressed their unwavering support for the monster hunting game and its publisher, despite the controversies linked to Enigma. This controversy is not limited to Monster Hunter World, however, as other Capcom titles have also been review-bombed: Capcom Arcade Stadium, Resident Evil Village, and even Street Fighter 5 or Lost Planet 3, which are dated games. Negative reviews piled up, and Capcom’s reputation on PC was seriously damaged. For the moment, Capcom has not yet responded officially to the protests. However, the publisher has already withdrawn its update for Resident Evil Revelations, stating that an “issue had been identified” in this patch. But the editor does not specify what kind of problem we are talking about…

Monster Hunter World is available now.
