Despite the waves of layoffs hitting the various Sony Interactive Entertainment studios and the cancellation of the multiplayer title included in Naughty Dog’s favorite franchise, the developers of The Last of Us have rather ambitious dreams for the rest of the license.

Naughty Dog commits to an ambitious project

The Last of Us may be more than ten years old, its touching story and its emblematic characters have never left the memory of players, and for good reason: not only did the title receive a DLC and a remaster the year following its release, as well as a full remake in 2022, but also a sequel in 2020, which itself underwent a remaster earlier this year. Moreover, The Last of Us was the subject of an excellent television adaptation in 2023 by HBOwith the father of the license behind his pen, Neil Druckman. In other words, the developers of The Last of Us have not been idle in recent years, and it seems that Naughty Dog don’t plan to stop there.

A few months ago, the studio announced the cancellation of a multiplayer project anchored in the universe of The Last of Us to focus on solo games. Naughty Dog justified their decision by explaining that they were afraid of monopolizing their developers’ attention on content post-launch for the multiplayer title, and that the development of their single-player games would suffer. This decision greatly displeased the community, which was waiting The Last of Us Online impatiently. But according to the latest information communicated by Neil Druckman in person, this choice could well be beneficial for the future of the license.

When you’re lost in the dark, look for the light

Even if Naughty Dog has communicated very little on this subject in recent years, Neil Druckman has hinted that the studio is working on several single-player games, which could mean a new IP, another spin-off for Uncharted or simply the continuation of The Last of Us. But it’s in an interview with Logically Speaking that Druckmann affirmed that the franchise’s next title is a “very ambitious” project that could be taxing for the entire team:

Druckmann explains that the process of creating this new title is “very difficult”, whether for him or for the other members of the team, but that he does his best to make the experience positive despite the obstacles encountered. He also takes the time to thank Kurt Margenauwho was part of the production team of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and of The Last of Us Part IIfor his involvement in this new project, and especially for a recent contribution which visibly had a big impact on the progress of the next game of Naughty Dog. In any case, given its scale and the words of Druckmannthis project seems to be still in its early stages in terms of development, so we will have to wait a while before we can dive back into the universe of The Last of Us.
