Elden Ring is full of secrets and treasures hidden throughout the Underlands. One of the key elements to uncovering these mysteries are the Stone Blade Keys. These one-time keys are essential for deactivating white fogs that block the passage to many of the game’s secrets.
To deactivate a white fog, you must interact with a nearby gargoyle statue and use one or two Stone Blade Keys. However, it is not always easy to predict whether using these precious keys is worth it. Behind each fog is either a very high level fight or a high quality item that may not fit your character build. Once fog is disabled, it remains in that state until switching to NG+, where it will be re-enabled and require keys again.
Where to find Stoneblade Keys?
There are several ways to obtain Stone Blade Keys in Elden Ring. The first is to choose a Stoneblade Key as your starting Gift.. While this may not be the optimal choice compared to a Golden Seed, it is an option if you want to obtain a specific item behind white fog as quickly as possible.
The second source of Stoneblade Keys is the inventory of merchants scattered throughout the world of Elden Ring. These merchants, recognizable by their campfire emitting smoke, offer Stone Blade Keys at varying prices. For example, the merchant located south of Necrolimbe, near the Castle at the tip of the continent, sells a key for 2000 runes. Another merchant hidden in the underground region offers no less than three for the same price.
Finally, you can also find Stone Blade Keys as loot to pick up on the ground, usually from isolated corpses that are either a bit hidden or difficult to access. When you’re exploring an area or dungeon and see a hard-to-reach white sphere, there’s a good chance it contains a Stone Blade Key.
How many Stoneblade Keys are there in Elden Ring?
Don’t worry: there are more Stone Blade Keys in the game than enough to unlock all access points. However, you may run out of them at the beginning, especially in Godrick’s castle which houses many secrets.
Here are some examples of places where Stone Blade Keys can be used:
- The tutorial at the very beginning of the game leads to the Tomb of Heroes, a dangerous dungeon but which contains excellent rewards, such as a talisman which grants life, stamina and equipment charge
- Certain eternal dungeons, locations that house specific bosses
- The Round Table has two successive fogs. The first allows you to pick up a special heavy crossbow. The second, which requires two keys to be openedgives access to a book of incantation spells
- An elevator in the underground area takes you back up to an interesting area in the Caelid region.
- Some vanished grace points are even behind these closed passages
