(Boursier.com) — Nexans a leader in the design and manufacture of cable systems and services, announces that it has been selected by SSEN Transmission for the supply and installation of high voltage cables for the transmission of electricity from the Orkney Islands to the town of Dounreay in the Highlands of Scotland.

The two parties have concluded a capacity reservation agreement by which Nexans undertakes to reserve manufacturing and installation capacity with a view to a significant contract whose signature is planned for 2024.

A vital project for the UK’s transition to renewable energy

In recent years, Orkney has invested heavily in developing electricity production from renewable sources.
Ongoing and planned renewable energy projects in the archipelago will produce more electricity than the current grid infrastructure can consume or export. This increased production capacity, which will be commissioned in the coming years, makes connecting Orkney to the Scottish transmission network a necessity in order to export this renewable electricity and increase the share of low-carbon electricity in the Kingdom -United.

The 220 kV underwater and terrestrial alternating current cables supplied by Nexans will play a decisive role in the energy transition in the United Kingdom, illustrating the Group’s commitment to the electrification of the planet.
