NextGen finals within reach – Stricker also has Milan in mind in Basel – Sport

The season finale of the best young professionals is approaching. Dominic Stricker is currently on the ejection seat.

Although injuries have thrown him back again and again this year, Dominic Stricker has had a good season so far. He won the Challenger tournaments in Cleveland and Zug. He was also in the round of 16 at the ATP 250 tournaments in Stuttgart and last week in Antwerp after qualifying.

This gives impetus for the first participation in the main draw of the Swiss Indoors in Basel, where Stricker meets Maxime Cressy (ATP 34) on Tuesday (from around 5:00 p.m. live on SRF Zwei and in the Sport App). He put the Americans in their place in Stuttgart on grass in three tie-break sets.

The 20-year-old can still hope for the first participation in the NextGen finals, which will take place from November 8th to 12th in Milan. The 8 best professionals aged 21 and younger fight for the title there.

Eight battle for three places

Stricker is currently 10th in the “Race to Milan”. But because leader Carlos Alcaraz will serve as number 1 at the ATP Finals of the “big ones” and second-placed Jannik Sinner is also not taking part, the Bernese stand would now be the last to slip into the field of participants.

Points for the next generation’s showdown can only be collected until Sunday. Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune, Jack Draper, Brandon Nakashima and Jiri Lehecka have already qualified. In addition to Stricker, 8 other players are fighting for the 3 remaining places.

Stricker: “I’m in a cool situation”

The two Italians Matteo Arnaldi and Luca Nardi, who are only 21 and 37 points respectively behind Stricker and are both contesting Challenger tournaments this week, are particularly on the lookout.

“I’ve probably never looked at the rankings and other tournaments so often,” says the Swiss with a laugh in the SRF interview. It’s all a bit hectic. “It would certainly help if I could win a few matches here. But I’m in a cool situation.”
