As the first active NFL professional, Carl Nassib made his homosexuality public: “I’ve wanted to do this for a while.”
Carl Nassib (28) became the first active NFL professional to make his homosexuality public. The Las Vegas Raiders player explained in a video he shared on Instagram: “I just wanted to take a moment and say I’m gay. I’ve wanted to do this for a while, and I’m finally comfortable getting rid of it.”
He is a “very private person,” said the 28-year-old, “so I hope you know that I’m really not doing this because of the attention. I just think that representation and visibility are so important,” added Nassib . He hopes that one day such videos will no longer be necessary.
Positive reactions
Carl Nassib also stated on Instagram that he had received support from the NFL, his coaches and teammates, for which he was grateful. The official NFL account also commented on Nassib’s post, “We’re proud of you Carl”. The Las Vegas Raiders shared Nassib’s statement on Twitter and also wrote: “We are proud of you, Carl.”
