Nicolas Cage as Dracula: a surprising incarnation in the Renfield trailer!

Nicolas Cage plays Count Dracula in Chris McKay’s “Renfield”. Here is the trailer.

The first Renfield trailer with Nicolas Cage as Count Dracula has finally been unveiled! This horror-comedy takes the characters from Bram Stoker’s novel and brings them to present-day New Orleans.

Directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War, Lego Batman), the feature film centers on RM Renfield played by Nicholas Hoult, Dracula’s devoted servant. Tired of having to perform malicious acts of the Transylvanian count, the latter will gradually reassess his vision of life and his will to continue to help the vampire…

In Bram Stoker’s novel, Renfield is portrayed as a delusional being locked up in an asylum. The latter eats living creatures because he believes that their blood will make him immortal. Stoker later reveals that these outlandish acts are the result of brainwashing by Dracula.

Although Nicholas Hoult plays the title role, the real curiosity of this film is Nicolas Cage’s interpretation of the monster. The latter appears at the end of the trailer and reveals an amazing look. The actor also recently told Empire magazine that he was inspired by Andy Warhol’s “Dracula”.

When I understood where McKay wanted to go, I realized that the film had a funny and pop side. So I thought, “It will be a pop-art Dracula.” Warhol did a great black-on-black Dracula. My character is in this vein.”

The American actor has reviewed the great classics of the genre and has studied in particular Murnau’s film, Nosferatu, the vampire.

I noticed all those little gestures that are, by today’s standards, a little too much. When Max Schreck snaps his wrist, stretches his fingers and blows in the smoke, I said to myself: “What is this? Is this dancing? What is he transmitting there?”. So I tried to create similar gestures in my own performance.

I told Chris [McKay] that I really wanted to include them in Renfield. It’s a big studio movie, so I wanted to play with it. If you play Dracula, you have a lot of leeway.”

And at the sight of these first images, the American actor therefore seems to have had a field day.

Written by Ryan Ridley, to whom we owe the Rick & Morty series, the film is also worn by Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz and Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Renfield is due out in theaters on May 31.
