Nintendo Switch: a reassuring statement for the longevity of the console, but which raises questions

With 132.46 million units sold worldwide, the Nintendo Switch has been a real success for the Japanese manufacturer, but as it approaches its 7th anniversary in March 2024 and given its well-established performance below its competitors on the market, the time to turn the page seems inexorably approaching. Rumors and logic dictate that the Switch 2 or whatever it is called will hit the market next year. Nothing official has been said about this yet, but a page ofa document posted online as part of the presentation of the latest quarterly financial results of Nintendo enough to raise some questions.

On page 57 entitled “Future Outlook”, President Shuntaro Furukawa states the following:

We will continue to release new titles and content for Nintendo Switch without being bound by the traditional concept of the platform lifecycle. In the future, we would like to continue to see many consumers playing on Nintendo Switch, and maintain our business momentum.

For owners of a Switch, it’s obviously good news to know that the console will still be entitled to games, which we already knew since the last Nintendo Direct announced a certain number for 2024, particularly in the universe of Mario. However, this is a speech which in the past has often served to reassure, without there being much more in terms of new features other than the games already revealed at the time of said declaration. Just look at the example of the 3DS in 2018.

Except that this time, it is a question of ignoring the traditional life cycle of the console and therefore continuing to power it. Should we then fear being stuck with technically lagging productions for several more years? Even if the games Nintendo stand out above all for their video game qualities, many players risk taking it badly. Perhaps this is a sign that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible as we hopewith certain productions which could then appear on the old hardware.

In passing, we learn that the Nintendo Switch Online has more than 38 million members as of September 30, 2023, while more than 330 million accounts Nintendo have been created.

If you want to buy a Switch, the OLED edition model Mario (red) is sold for €319.99 to the Fnac And at the house of Cdiscount.
