As Kotaku reports, a former supervisor in the repair department has now spoken up anonymously. The department was overwhelmed with hundreds of incoming controllers a day, the source reports.
Initially, Nintendo only sent out new Joy-Cons, but then the Japanese company switched to having the Switch controllers repaired.
