Nissan, as part of its EV36Zero initiative, announces a
major transformation of its Sunderland factory in the United Kingdom,
paving the way for the exclusively electric production of its
iconic models: Juke, Qashqai and Leaf.

Nissan, in line with its EV36Zero plan, intensifies its commitment
towards an emissions-free future. The carmaker recently revealed that the next generations of its Juke, Qashqai and Leaf models, produced at its UK facility in Sunderland, will be fully electric. This initiative is part of Nissan’s overall strategy to achieve carbon neutrality and accelerate the electrification of its vehicle fleet.

7,000 jobs saved and three new electric models

These three models, which will be based on the CMF-EV platform used by the Nissan Ariya, are of capital importance for the manufacturer since the Qashqai is the best-selling car in the United Kingdom in 2022, the Juke sold at more than a million copies, and the Leaf was produced in more than 250,000 units in Sunderland.

As a result, Nissan’s future electric models will include fully electric versions of the popular SUVs Qashqai and Juke, as well as the new generation of the Leaf. A priori, these models will have to find inspiration through three original concepts, two of which, the Hyper Urban Concept for the Qashqai and the Hyper Punk for the Juke, were unveiled during the last Japan Mobility Show. More wise, the future Leaf should be inspired by the Chill-Out Concept unveiled in 2021.

UK Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt welcomed the manufacturer’s commitment to its renewed confidence in the Sunderland site. In fact, the factory was on borrowed time with the switch to electric and already had two assembly lines which will now have to be modernized. Not to mention R&D investments in tooling, maintenance and worker training.

The future electric Nissan Micra will be built in France alongside the future electric Renault R5 and R4.
