Ukraine crisis: US receives letter from Moscow

In order to solve the Ukraine crisis through diplomatic channels, Washington and Moscow are in constant correspondence. Now the White House has received a new reply from the Kremlin. The US State Department does not want to comment on the exact content.

According to the United States, it has received a new written response from the Russian government in correspondence on the Ukraine crisis. A spokesman for the US State Department confirmed receipt of the letter on Monday without going into detail about the content. “We believe that negotiating in public would not be productive, so we will leave it to Russia to discuss its response if it wishes,” he said.

The spokesman reiterated, “We remain fully committed to dialogue to resolve these issues and will continue to consult closely with our allies and partners, including Ukraine.”

The exchange of letters came on the eve of another phone call between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday. This is Russia’s reaction to a letter from Washington.

The US letter was in turn a reaction to Russia’s proposals to resolve the crisis in mid-December. Russia is demanding that NATO troops be withdrawn from Eastern European countries that joined the alliance after the end of the Cold War and a guarantee that Ukraine will not join NATO. The US and NATO had rejected these demands in their letters on Wednesday.

However, Washington was willing to talk about issues such as the deployment of missiles or the mutual limitation of military exercises.
