Courted Xabi Alonso stays at Bayer Leverkusen

Coach Xabi Alonso will probably stay with Bayer Leverkusen beyond the end of the season. Several media outlets report this unanimously. The 42-year-old has a contract until 2026 and has recently been linked to Bayern Munich and Liverpool FC.
According to information from the “Bild” newspaper from England, Xabi Alonso will remain head coach at league leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the coming season. This should be announced at the Bundesliga club’s press conference this Friday (2 p.m.). Sky and Sport1 as well as “Kicker” also reported that Alonso will not be leaving the club. The club initially did not want to confirm the details.
The Spaniard has a contract with the possible German champions until June 30, 2026. The 42-year-old, who is undefeated with his team in 38 competitive games this season, was considered a hot candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel at FC Bayern Munich. Uli Hoeneß had previously stated that the record champions were interested in signing the sought-after coach. Liverpool FC are also said to have been interested in Alonso as the successor to Jürgen Klopp, who left in the summer.
Alonso took over Bayer in 17th place on October 5, 2022. After a difficult first few months, advancing to the play-offs for the Europa League in Monaco in February 2023 was a kind of initial spark. Bayer and Alonso have played 57 competitive games since then. They won 42 of them and lost only three.
Alonso led Leverkusen into the Europa League and into the semi-finals of the current competition. With a ten-point lead over FC Bayern, Bayer has the best chance of winning the championship. In the cup, Leverkusen are the only Bundesliga team favorites in the semi-finals, and they will face West Ham United in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
