No injuries – fire extinguished in the Kunsthaus Zurich – renovations necessary – News

  • Around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, the protection and rescue service in Zurich received an alarm about a fire in the Kunsthaus Zurich.
  • The fire brigade responded with a large contingent.
  • It is not yet possible to say how high the financial damage is.

The fire broke out in a packing room right next to the delivery, says Björn Quellenberg, Head of Communications and Marketing at the Kunsthaus Zürich. In this room, which already has the same climatic conditions as in a museum, works of art are packed and unpacked or temporarily stored.

Works of art did not burn because there were none in this room at the time of the fire, according to the Kunsthaus at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire quickly. Still, it left damage.

Air conditioning dispersed the smoke

The smoke was distributed over a wide area by the air conditioning system, and it also penetrated through door gaps in exhibition rooms and offices. “That left deposits,” said spokesman Björn Quellenberg. The closer to the source of the fire, the stronger these are. The covering is on floors, walls and furniture. It is currently being checked whether works of art are also affected. These would then have to be restored.

On Wednesday, appraisers and insurance people were busy assessing the extent of the damage. It is not yet possible to say how high the financial damage is.

It is already clear that individual rooms need renovation: the old parts of the building, which were built between 1910 and 1976, will therefore remain closed until further notice. Part of the collection and the temporary exhibition “Rudolf Koller. The Sketchbooks».

The Kunsthaus expects the work to take “several weeks”. As soon as it is foreseeable when the Kunsthaus can return to normal operations, it wants to communicate again. The new Chipperfield building was not affected by the fire. It remains open to the public.
