No injuries – slipped down slope under broken water pipe

There was a massive landslide in Velden on Thursday evening. One of the supply lines to the elevated tank on the Veldener Alm broke. Due to the large amount of water, a large piece of forest slid meters below it.

It could be a result of the storms of the past few weeks: All of a sudden, the strongest water main broke in the direction of the Veldener Alm. Manager of the Velden – Schiefling waterworks, Kurt Standmann: “One of the three supply lines broke. Perhaps it was washed away by the storm.” 600,000 liters of water were lost and almost 1000 cubic meters of earth slid away. After all, both other lines still deliver drinking water to all households in Velden and the surrounding area. The state geologist examined the landslide. “We are now securing everything and the fire brigade has also checked everything,” explains Standmann. However, due to the length of the fracture, repairs may take longer. Luckily, no one got hurt. “The hiking trail is closed anyway because of the storms in the past few weeks. But of course they still check whether someone was on the way,” says Standmann. A nearby building is also likely to have remained undamaged.
