No online courses – WU will switch to 2G and face-to-face teaching on March 1st

With the start of the summer semester, the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) is switching to 2G. From March 1, students and employees will only be able to enter the university with proof of corona vaccination or proof of recovery. From this date, all courses and examinations will take place in attendance.

There will be no compensation or online offers for those who have not been vaccinated, only the possibility of a semester-long leave of absence, explains Rector Edeltraud Hanappi-Egger in the “Standard”. As a “scientific institution”, WU is committed to corona vaccination – and 2G is the “logical consequence” of compulsory vaccination, explained Hanappi-Egger. So far, 2G has only had one university – namely the University of Klagenfurt – since November. The chairmen of the senates of the universities recently called for a uniform 2G regulation for all university members, and the Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) is also in favor of it. The WU rector hopes that 2G will allow full presence again. 2.5G is still valid until the end of the winter semester and 2.5G+ (i.e. plus PCR tests) for the attendance “major exam week”. From March 1st, students and employees must be vaccinated. Unvaccinated employees are at risk of consequences under labor law, such as the cessation of salary payments. 90 percent of WU students are vaccinated, but Hanappi-Egger does not expect any major problems. Because as early as November, 97 percent of the staff – and now probably even more – were vaccinated, and since autumn new employees have only been admitted with 2G. More than 90 percent of the approximately 21,200 WU students are currently vaccinated.
