PARIS (Reuters) – GRTgaz, the operator of most of the gas transmission network in France, said on Wednesday that it had not yet encountered any particular difficulty in transporting gas due to the consequences of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

In a situation update published on its website, GRTgaz indicates that it remains mobilized “to be able to respond without delay to any change in supply conditions” in France, while Germany activated this Wednesday the first level of alert in its emergency gas supply plan.

“In France as in Europe, the international situation leads to the search for measures to diversify supplies and increase the possibilities of arrivals of liquefied natural gas (LNG)”, says the operator.

“New capacities at the Fos Cavaou and Dunkirk LNG terminals have been announced to increase our LNG supply,” adds GRTgaz.

While Russia’s invasion of Ukraine raises fears of energy supply problems in Europe, mainly Russian gas, Germany has triggered the “early warning” of its emergency plan, specifying that this measure was intended to prepare the country for possible disruptions or a stoppage of natural gas flows from Russia.

In France, GRTgaz explains that a project to connect a floating regasification and storage barge is under study and that discussions on this subject are underway with TotalEnergies and Haropa Port.

“This installation would make it possible both to increase the resilience of the French gas system and to increase exports to adjacent European countries if necessary”, indicates the group while specifying that the project is not confirmed at this stage.
