“Ultimately, the same applies to Omar as to Matija Nastasic and other players who have contracts with a certain financial volume, namely that they have no future in the 2nd Bundesliga,” said sports director Rouven Schröder. “Despite this difficult situation, he has behaved very professionally in the past few weeks and supported the team as well as he could.” Mascarell came to Gelsenkirchen from Real Madrid in 2018 after two years as a loan player for Eintracht Frankfurt for around ten million euros. In the relegation season Mascarell was temporarily captain of the Royal Blues. In Amine Harit, Schalke is trying to transfer another prominent player by August 31.
