  • During the Ukraine war and numerous other crises, the Nobel Prize Committee announced in Oslo who would receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • The most important peace prize in the world this year goes to the Belarusian human rights activist Ales Bialiatski and two human rights organizations.
  • 343 candidates – including 251 personalities and 92 organizations – were nominated for the award. The names of the nominees are traditionally kept secret for 50 years.

Last year the award went to the two journalists Maria Ressa from the Philippines and Dmitri Muratow from Russia. They received the Nobel Prize for their courageous fight for freedom of expression.

With this, the committee ends the week of Nobel Prize announcements. The 2022 Nobel Prizes in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry and Literature have already been awarded. Won in these divisions Svante Pääbo (Medicine), Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger (physics) as well Barry Sharpless, Morten Meldal and Caroline Bertozzi (Chemistry). The French author received yesterday Annie Ernaux the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Nobel Peace Prize is the only one not awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, but in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. All Nobel prizes this year are again endowed with ten million Swedish crowns (just under CHF 900,000). They will all be presented on December 10th, the anniversary of the death of prize donor and dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel (1833 to 1896).
