After a high-flying first opus, the long-awaited sequel to the saga, presented as a diptych depicting the confrontation between Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and his former partner Davy Jones, made its first film debut in 2006 with The Secret of the Cursed Chest.

Indeed, as spectators who discovered the film in theaters at the time of its release will certainly remember, The Secret of the Cursed Chest was characterized in particular by an anthology cliffhanger. If you have not seen it yet, we advise you not to continue reading this article, and to come back only after having discovered it.

The scene in question, located in the very last seconds of the feature film, takes place in the cabin of Tia Dalma, a strange woman living in the middle of a swamp. Around her, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and their friends look gloomy, because their adventure companion Captain Jack Sparrow has just fallen into the mouth of the terrible Kraken.

But against all odds, according to Tia Dalma, they still have a chance to bring Jack back to life. To recover the latter, which according to her is retained in “Davy Jones’ Lair”they will need “to face the mysterious and haunted waters of the oceans at the end of the world”. Dalma then adds that for this they will need“a captain who knows all the secrets”.

It was then that the sound of a boot was heard on the stairs of the small house and that, under the dumbfounded eyes of the protagonists, Captain Hector Barbossa – antagonist of the first part that Jack Sparrow had pierced with his blade – reappeared in flesh and blood.

The pirate played by Geoffrey Rush is far from being the only character in cinema to unexpectedly return from the dead.

This twist, nicely dressed by Hans Zimmer’s famous theme, marked the end of the film. Stunned by this unexpected return and by the reappearance of this character that everyone thought was dead, the spectators had to wait until the following year, and the theatrical release of the third opus, to get the end of the story.

As we were told at the beginning of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End – quite expeditiously, it must be admitted – it was therefore Tia Dalma who, thanks to her powers, had resuscitated Barbossa . Later in the film, we learned that she had brought the pirate back to life for a very specific reason: to bring together the Tribunal of the Brotherhood, thus allowing her to recover her original form, that of the goddess Calypso.
