“None of this was planned in the script”: the impressive scene from the John Wick series explained by the stunt coordinator

It is a sequence which occurs at the end of the first episode of “The Continental”, the “John Wick” series, and which does not go unnoticed. Stunt coordinator Larnell Stovall reveals the behind-the-scenes of the kitchen scene.

After four films, the John Wick saga continues in series with The Continental, available on Prime Video. The plot takes place in the seventies, therefore without Keanu Reeves, and is particularly interested in the character of Winston (Colin Woodell) and the Le Continental hotel, the favorite refuge of criminals.

The first of the three episodes keeps its promises in terms of action and one of the last scenes is particularly likely to mark the minds of fans of the franchise. She pits Yen (Nhung Kate) against an assassin in a kitchen. The originality of this sequence lies in the everyday accessories used to fight, such as an iron.

And while a fight begins between the two characters in this tiny space, the violence rises to a crescendo and the scene ends, among other things, with a hand being crushed in the sink.

We wanted to do something unique and different.

None of this was planned in the scriptreveals Larnell Stovall, the stunt coordinator interviewed by AlloCiné in London. The directors allow my team to express themselves and come up with ideas. Once these ideas are created, they are integrated into the scenario so that other departments can prepare.

It’s a bit like saying, “Okay, we’re in an apartment. We’re going to fight in the kitchen. What items can we use? The normal item would be the knifecontinues Larnell Stovall. We wanted to do something unique and different.”

The rest is improvised with the elements of the decor: “Once we see hanging clothes, it means there is an ironing board, that is, an iron. So we wanted to make sure we took advantage of these unique opportunities and turned them into weapons. The next time a viewer uses an iron, maybe they will think of this scene (laughs).

When asked if he loves bloody effects, Larnell Stovall says without hesitation: “I love that. Wait until you see what I try to do next.” You have been warned.

The Continental is available on Prime Video. The second episode is available this Friday.
