NordVPN will offer monthly transparency reports. These will include all requests sent to the publisher by different governments, as well as copyright complaints.

NordVPN, which we evaluated in our columns, is evolving its communication for its users. The VPN service has just announced new measures to notify subscribers of requests made by government authorities. Like any online service, NordVPN regularly receives requests for information from local jurisdictions, governments, or complaints relating to non-compliance with copyright. In a blog post, NordVPN indicates that it is setting up monthly transparency reports today, to give a more precise idea of the number of requests processed by its teams.

Reports to detail the number of requests received by NordVPN each month

Today, NordVPN uses a warrant canary, which is a declaration that the organization or company has not received government requests to access certain data. As the service explains on its blog, this technique contains certain limitations and “ works on a principle of omission “. Indeed, the removal of this canary warrant shows that requests for information have been processed, but gives no idea of the volume of requests or their nature.

NordVPN wanted to offer more transparency to its users, and is starting a transition that introduces these monthly reports. The first, available at the bottom of the article announcing this new measure, shows that the online service processed 35 requests from governments and 783,751 automatic requests for copyright infringement, under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

NordVPN will continue to share a canary warrant and a transparency report for several months before definitively switching to full declarations.

The online service finally indicates that its teams have not received any letters from United States national security, gag procedures or government mandates leading it to disclose sensitive information about its users.

NordVPN Essential

  • Excellent performance
  • Streaming (including Netflix US) and very efficient TV access
  • Very large number of servers

A leading figure in VPNs, NordVPN continues to evolve at a rapid pace. Its performance has gone up a notch thanks to the deployment of a fleet of 10 Gb/s RAM servers and its NordLynx protocol. In addition to well-built applications, it stands out for its very good performance and excellent stability. A service that we can only recommend and which seriously competes with ExpressVPN and CyberGhost in terms of value for money. The NordVPN Advanced plan includes VPN + NordPass (password manager) while the NordVPN Premium plan includes VPN + NordPass + NordLocker (Secure cloud storage)
