Magnus Carlsen wins a high-profile tournament and becomes the first player ever to reach 2900 points in the tour rating.

The final of the “Julius Baer Generation Cup” between Carlsen and the 19-year-old Indian Arjun Erigaisi was a one-sided affair: the Norwegian won the first phase with 2.5:0.5 points and the rematch on Sunday with 2:0. Carlsen is the first player in chess history to achieve 2900 points in the tour rating.

There was nothing new from Carlsen on Sunday about the allegations of fraud against the young American Hans Niemann that had been subliminally made for weeks. However, he announced a statement “tomorrow or in the next few days”.

“No, but” from the association

Carlsen had given up his preliminary round game against Niemann after just one move in the online tournament. The international chess association FIDE had criticized Carlsen’s behavior on Friday and reminded him of the Norwegian’s role model function as world champion.

But FIDE also said: “We share his deep concern about the damage that cheating could do to chess.” There is currently no evidence that Niemann cheated. The American has vehemently denied any allegations.
