QForty-nine Nupes deputies have demanded “radical and immediate measures” against climate change, and urge the State to respect the injunctions of justice after the “Case of the Century” trial, in a column published on Saturday on the website of Sunday newspaper.

They are speaking one year after the conclusions of the Paris administrative court which, on October 14, 2021, noted that the ceiling for greenhouse gas emissions had been exceeded by 62 million tonnes of CO equivalent.2 and therefore enjoined the State to “repair the consequences of its failure” by December 31, 2022, the signatories recall.

Four NGOs, gathered under the banner “The Affair of the Century” (Notre Affaire à tous, Greenpeace France, Nicolas Hulot Foundation and Oxfam France) and supported by a petition of more than 2.3 million citizens, had seized in early 2019 the Administrative Court of Paris to have the shortcomings of the State in the fight against global warming over the period 2015-2018 noted. In February 2021, the court ruled in their favor, declaring the State “responsible” for the breaches of the commitment it itself made, within the framework of the Paris agreement or the “carbon budgets” whose France has acquired.

All the Nupes… except the PCF

Among the signatories, the ecologist Marie Pochon, at the initiative of the tribune, the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure, the head of the ecologist deputies Cyrielle Chatelain, the former national secretary of EELV Julien Bayou or the deputies LFI Aymeric Caron and Clémence Guetté – but no communist deputy.

“Have the State and its representation taken the measure of what these decisions mean in terms of the new obligations attached to its action? they ask on the eve of a “march against the high cost of living and climate inaction” in Paris, at the initiative of LFI. “Faced with the climate generation, the government is waiting. Watch the droughts, the heat waves, the shortages increase while seeming to discover a catastrophe predicted for more than 40 years, to rise on August 15, after more than six months of major rainfall deficit, an interministerial cell on drought, of which we does not know the conclusions as of October 11”, regret the deputies.

They are based on a UN report estimating that “current national contributions already put us on a trajectory of 3.2°C warming by the end of the century”. The deputies thus point the finger at a government which “seems to have heard of the climate, not of the emergency”. They demand “radical and immediate measures” to guarantee a “future”, not economically stable, not happy, but simply “liveable”, according to the IPCC.
