Nuremberg gets stuck in the basement: Paderborn misses the great opportunity for first place

Nuremberg gets stuck in the basement
Paderborn missed the big chance for first place

SC Paderborn does not manage to exploit the leader’s mistake and replace Darmstadt in first place in the 2nd Bundesliga. At the other end of the table, 1. FC Nürnberg is not progressing. Jahn Regensburg, on the other hand, jumps into the upper half, at least temporarily.

Eintracht Braunschweig – SC Paderborn 0:0

Second division soccer club SC Paderborn have not scored their own goal for the first time this season and have missed the leap to the top of the table. After three competitive wins in a row, coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team only managed a goalless draw at Eintracht Braunschweig. For the in-form Lower Saxony it was the seventh league game in a row without defeat.

Paderborn, who eliminated Bundesliga club Werder Bremen in the cup during the week, remain in second place with 26 points. Hamburger SV, who host Ostwestfalen for the top game next weekend, can overtake 1. FC Magdeburg on Sunday.

It was the home side who had a great chance to take the lead after just four minutes: Anton-Leander Donkor hit the post from close range. The East Westphalians responded promptly, Robert Leipertz pushed the ball delicately past the goal (6′). The game flattened out as a result, the SCP, with the best offensive in the league, did not manage to convert its large percentage of ball possession into goals.

Jahn Regensburg – SV Sandhausen 2: 1 (1: 1)

Jahn Regensburg has continued its upward trend also thanks to a lightning start. Coach Mersad Selimbegovic’s team defeated SV Sandhausen 2-1 (1-1) and initially caught up with the top third of the table. An own goal by SVS captain Alexander Schirow (1st) gave the hosts the lead after 40 seconds, Andreas Albers (70th) scored the winning goal after the break. Alexander Esswein (12th) had equalized in an initially balanced game.

Coach Alois Schwartz’s sand houses are still waiting for the first away win of the season after the 13th matchday and could still slip to the relegation place on Sunday. Der Jahn has now been unbeaten in three league games and scored seven points.

Schirov heralded an entertaining initial phase with his unsuccessful rescue operation with his head. It was his fourth own goal in the SVS jersey and the fastest second division own goal since data collection began. Sandhausen only shook himself briefly and quickly rewarded himself with Esswein. Overall, however, Regensburg was more active. Albers, who was always wanted, missed the lead after the break from close range with a header (53rd), a good quarter of an hour later he did better.

1. FC Nuremberg – Hannover 96 0:0

1. FC Nürnberg will have to wait for their first home win under new coach Markus Weinzierl. The club kept a 0-0 draw against Hannover 96 in their third competitive game without conceding a goal, but failed to gain any breathing room in the relegation battle. Hannover remains at least four points behind the promotion ranks.

The unattractive game was characterized by many duels and ball losses. Hanover did not come to an end at first. The club, who were also imprecise, put Lower Saxony’s goal in serious danger twice before the break with Christoph Daferner (2′), Mats Möller Daehli (36′) and a free-kick from Johannes Geis (44′).

There was little to be seen of the Hanoverians after the restart – until a free kick from Derrick Köhn, with which club goalkeeper Christian Mathenia just raised his right fist (62nd). Shortly afterwards, Hendrik Weydandt headed just wide of the Nuremberg goal (67′), later a second time (86′). In the meantime, the guests pushed more courageously for a goal – without success. In the disorganized final phase, the club was a little closer to victory – but it also lacked the penetrating power.
