Could it be that the Graphic card is finally renamed RTX 4070 for a more coherent positioning of the different models?

Visibly satisfied with the launch of the GeForce RTX 4090, NVIDIA has just published a short post to take stock of the “suite” and recognize that the name RTX 4080 12 GB was perhaps not the happiest.

Two too dissimilar RTX 4080s

In its message, NVIDIA specifies that – it obviously could not be otherwise – the RTX 4080 12 GB is a “ fantastic graphics card but indicates that his name was not adequate.

Many observers had already noticed an inconsistency between the 16 GB and 12 GB versions of the RTX 4080: the former will offer 20% more computing power, a significantly larger L2 cache and 40% more memory bandwidth.

So many elements that dig a gap between the two models going well beyond the only amount of memory. NVIDIA simply acknowledged that the naming was ” confusing “.

Towards an RTX 4070 12 GB?

But while it welcomes the launch of the RTX 4090 and hopes that the queues observed for this release will meet on November 16 when the RTX 4080 16 GB is released, NVIDIA surprises.

Indeed, the American company has quite simply decided the ” unlaunch of the RTX 4080 12 GB. In other words, the card will not be distributed. It’s hard to imagine NVIDIA contacting its partners to tell them to pack everything up four weeks before the release.

The most logical thing would therefore be for NVIDIA to change the name of its card to, who knows, perhaps a 4070 12 GB version more in line with its technical specifications.
