At CES 2022, Nvidia presented us with two new dedicated graphics cards for laptops: the GeForce 3070 Ti and 3080 Ti. There is also the Max-Q technology in its 4th evolution, with new functions.
AMD and Nvidia face off at CES 2022. While AMD has announced several mobile Radeons, Nvidia is beefing up its game with two new solutions for its partners. On the one hand, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, on the other, the GeForce 3080 Ti.
To counter AMD and Apple, Nvidia is beefing up its game
Let’s start with the RTX 3070 Ti. Nvidia did not give details during the conference, apart from the fact that this card is 70% more powerful than the RTX 2070. Nvidia has repeatedly insisted on the performance of its cards against the latest MacBook Pro 16 equipped with Apple M1 Max / Pro chips. According to Nvidia, GeForce RTX laptops are on average 7 times faster for 3D rendering than the latest MacBook Pro 16.
Laptops equipped with an RTX 3070 Ti will retail from $ 1,500 starting in early February. These machines are designed to run all games under very good conditions on a QHD screen. It is now screens that we find more and more, Razer offers its Blade 14/15 with QHD 240 Hz screens for example.
Laptops with a GeForce 3080 Ti will have 16 GB of dedicated GDDR6 video memory. Nvidia specifies that this configuration allows to have performance superior to the old Titan RTX which was for desktop PCs. It is not unusual that we have few figures to communicate during the announcements, we will have to wait to test the first machines from partner manufacturers like MSI or Razer.
Nvidia is talking about a price tag of $ 2,500, but that will depend on each model and manufacturer.
As usual, don’t compare the performance of GeForce RTX for desktop PCs to GeForce RTX for laptops. Although these graphics cards have the same name, they do not have the same performance or software functions.
Return of Max-Q
But there is one last announcement, it is the arrival of the 4th Generation Max-Q Laptops. As a reminder, since 2017 Nvidia has differentiated its high TGP cards from those with low TGP by adding the Max-Q mention.
Max-Q was therefore only used to indicate a lower TGP. Now it is a term that encompasses specific design and technologies. Put simply, the Max-Q versions have software features (such as Dynamic Boost 2.0, Resizable BAR or WhisperMod 2.0) aimed at controlling its level.
Nvidia has announced some new technologies for the Max-Q notebooks, including an AI CPU Optimizer which can control the frequencies and consumption of certain Intel and AMD CPUs ” next-gen“, Rapid Core Scaling which can deactivate some GPU cores while increasing the frequencies of others for productivity tasks, and Battery Boost 2.0, which will tune both your game and your hardware to optimize battery life.
The American firm claims that the latter function can increase battery life by 70%, presumably at the expense of performance in games.
