In the works for a while behind the scenes of Oculus, the successors of the goose that laid the golden eggs Oculus Quest 2
become clearer.

YouTuber Brad Lynch, specialist in the matter, would indeed have received first-hand information concerning VR headsets similar to Quest Pro and Quest 3.

Meta Quest Pro scheduled for 2022

For the time being called “Project Cambria”, a form dedicated to professionals in the Quest range should, according to Brad Lynch, arrive in 2022. More precisely, it could be released between April and June of this year. Either the period during which Meta, the group of Mark Zuckerberg, holds its developer conference.

A rumor also corroborated by the Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) group in a report detailing its predictions for the display industry in 2022. According to Brad Lynch and DSCC, the Quest Pro could ” push the boundaries of display technologies and present a thinner form factor “.

On the one hand, it should offer high color resolution through the headset to allow a better experience in augmented reality. On the other hand, it should be much lighter and thinner than the Quest 2, in particular thanks to a Mini-LED display on “pancake” lenses, which aim to better process the light to display more beautiful colors.

Given the name Pro, we should expect a high-caliber AR / VR headset, and therefore at a price significantly higher than that of the very accessible Quest 2. Brad Lynch indicated that Meta intends to sell 3 million units Quest Pro.

Meta Quest 3 not expected until at least 2023

With this in mind, it seems unlikely that Meta will seek to compete with itself by offering two Quest models in the same year. This is why the real successor to Quest 2, the Quest 3, should arrive at least sometime in 2023.

According to Brad Lynch, the Quest 3 will not use a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR3 chip, also expected in 2023, but rather a chip specially designed by Meta. The goal is to offer a chip suitable for a VR headset, but also to stand out from other competing models.

Also according to Brad Lynch, the Quest 3 would also use a uOLED display, compact and economical, while promising quality images and colors. This could therefore imply that the Quest 3 will offer a slimmer design than its predecessor, in line with the Quest Pro.

But we should not a priori expect a formal presentation of Quest 3 before the Meta Connect 2023 conference, normally expected in September-October next year. It will therefore be necessary to be patient before seeing the arrival of the successor to the very popular Quest 2.
