Oculus VR disappears, 10 years after the kickstarter

It was announced, it is now effective: the Oculus brand is no longer. We must now talk about Meta Quest.

After a fad in the 90s, modern virtual reality has its origins in the success of Oculus’ Kickstarter project. Launched in 2012, the project reinvents virtual reality with modern technologies around a simple concept: a screen placed in front of the eyes and a system of lenses to create the stereoscopic effect necessary for immersion. Ten years and a takeover by Facebook later, the Oculus brand disappeared.

Welcome Meta Quest

From the announcement of Facebook’s name change to Meta, we knew it had to happen. Last night, Wednesday January 26, the Oculus brand’s Twitter account formalized the change. The account is now under the name Meta Quest, and has the profile name @MetaQuestVR.

The Oculus brand is not going to completely disappear. Meta indeed specifies that certain tools intended for developers will always carry the historical mark. For the general public, however, everything will now go through Meta, the new face that Mark Zuckerberg wants to give to his company.

It is interesting to see that the brand is not simply “Meta” but “Meta Quest”, a sign that we should no longer see a product in the Go or Rift ranges. The Oculus Quest was a great success, especially its second generation. All future products from the manufacturer will therefore carry the Quest brand.

Virtual reality should be one of the trends of the year in tech. We are now waiting to discover the Meta Quest 3.
