26-year-old Marco Odermatt proves his maturity in the giant slalom in Schladming.

It’s a testament to class and self-confidence how Marco Odermatt skied the second run in Schladming. Knowing that he was around a second behind the half-time leader Manuel Feller, the motto was not to rush down the Planai “at any risk.”

No, Odermatt was careful to find a healthy balance. «I couldn’t risk my life. That wouldn’t have worked here. I knew I had to be on the line. Push and drive beautifully. I succeeded.”

This meant that the man from Nidwalden was able to continue some legendary series:

  • He won the eighth giant slalom in a row across seasons.
  • This winter he won all five giant slaloms.
  • In the last 22 races and since March 20, 2021, Odermatt has always been on the podium in the “Riesen”.
  • It was the eleventh top-three result of the season in a row (four giant slalom, five downhill and two super-G).

The crazy race to catch up shows “that you can never give up. That you can always hope for the best. At the beginning of the season I had a few hundredths of bad luck on my side, but now I’ve been lucky. In life everything balances out.”
