Beer, chicken, pretzels – many Wiesn delicacies invite you to feast. With these tips you can get through the Oktoberfest without a calorie trap.

The fifth season in Munich is in full swing again this year. On the Theresienwiese, marquees and snack stands offer numerous delicacies – from beer to the Wiesn pretzel to hearty cheese spaetzle or the Oktoberfest classic, the roast chicken. Anyone who wants to keep their slim figure at the world’s largest folk festival will find it difficult. We have put together some tips on how to take care of your body during and after a visit to a beer tent. This is not only good for the waistline, but also for the immune system!

Stay away from beer (with alcohol)

As painful as it is, if you don’t want to gain weight during the Wiesn, you should stay away from beer (or alcohol in general). Because alcohol inhibits the breakdown of fat in the body, so that calories already consumed cannot be used as quickly as usual. A pint of beer contains about 500 calories.

Incidentally, non-alcoholic beer has on average only half as many calories. And it is said to have health-promoting effects. It is not for nothing that alcohol-free wheat beer has long been considered an isotonic sports drink that compensates for water loss after a workout and at the same time provides the body with valuable minerals and vitamins. Or just during a visit to the Wiesn.

Maintain a good electrolyte balance

A small digression: increased alcohol consumption inhibits the release of the hormone vasopressin. The hormone actually ensures that the water is retained in the body. Therefore, if you drink a lot of alcohol, you have to go to the toilet much more often than usual. The consequence for our body: There can be a lack of electrolytes such as magnesium, calcium, potassium and sodium.

To supply the body with electrolytes, you can, among other things, make your own electrolyte drink. You need: 500 milliliters of orange juice, 500 milliliters of still water, a teaspoon of salt. Mix all ingredients well until the salt has dissolved. Alternatively, you can use vegetable broth dissolved in a cup of hot water. This counteracts the hangover after visiting the marquee.

Don’t neglect exercise and sleep

Even if everyday life is upside down for real Oktoberfest fans from mid-September to the beginning of October and everything revolves around the beer tent: If you don’t want to gain weight and want to do something good for your body, you should not miss out on sufficient exercise and sport during the Oktoberfest period . Best in the fresh air. A long autumn walk or a hike not only ensures exercise in the muscles, but also a clear head. Getting enough sleep and rest is also important. Regeneration is good for the immune system.

Maintain a healthy, low-calorie diet

Not that easy, but possible: Bavarian cuisine is not exactly known for its low-calorie cuisine. Nevertheless, you can enjoy the food classics at the Oktoberfest, if you do it in moderation. For example, you can share different dishes with friends and only eat half the calories of the respective food. If you want to eat a traditional dish with as few calories as possible, you should stick to the Steckerlfisch.

In addition, in recent years the offer of vegetarian and vegan Oktoberfest treats increased due to demand. Dishes such as pumpkin soup or lamb’s lettuce on kohlrabi carpaccio can also be bought in the festival tents and at the food stands. Healthy and tasty alternatives to roast chicken and knuckle of pork.

Last but not least: The body should definitely be supplied with enough vitamins and nutrients when away from the Theresienwiese. That means: eat salad and vegetable soup and drink lots of water! In this way you get fit through the Oktoberfest time – without a calorie trap.
