On the occasion of the start of the French vaccination campaign against Covid-19 on December 27, Olivier Véran gave an interview to the Sunday newspaper. In it, the Minister of Health warns that if the epidemic situation "had to get worse", the government could establish a third lockdown.
The health authorities fear a third wave after the holidays, which could occur in the first weeks of the year 2021. The circulation of the coronavirus is still important, recalls Olivier Véran: "15,000 contaminations detected per day on average, whereas we had fallen to 11,000". "The objective of 5,000 [new cases per day] is moving away. And the pressure on the health system remains high, with 1,500 hospitalizations per day, a tension which decreases very little in intensive care", explains the Minister of Health. According to him, the health situation is already worrying in "the Grand Est, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and the Alpes-Maritimes department, starting with Nice", with "an increase in the incidence among the elderly in certain rural areas".
Several mayors of eastern France and the president of the Grand-Est region ask "reconfine either territorially or nationally" after the holidays, and Olivier Véran does not exclude this possibility, declaring to the JDD be ready to take "the necessary measures, if the situation were to worsen". "We never rule out measures that may be necessary to protect populations. It does not mean that we have decided, but that we observe the situation hour by hour", he says.
